Letting Go

“Look at me.”

“Yeah… look at you.” there’s a pause. “When they hate you for no reason. You are the reason. When they talk about your behavior… they are tired of behaving. They are jealous.”

“That’s just stupid. You think people are that concerned with you, or me?”

“Yes. I do. Jealousy is a vampire. It consumes a person. How much time and energy do they spend on hatin’ you? Jealousy cannot exist alone. It needs another person to be jealous of.”

“Look at me. I think you are right about most of what you say… except for one thing.”

“And what’s that?”

“To say someone is jealous of you is arrogant.”

“Not if you don’t let them suck more energy out of you. Just say it… they are jealous of you and move on. They’re not worth it.”

“But they are worth it.”

“Why?” … no answer. “Look at me.” Their eyes meet. “Why?”

“Because they are supposed to be Christians. We are supposed to be Christians.”

“Yeah, but they ain’t all Christians. And you cannot know who is and who isn’t.”

“I don’t believe that… sorry. You believe in the life-transforming power of Jesus… but you don’t want to apply it to real life.”

“What are you talkin’ about.”

“I’m talkin’ about the power of God. If God has put His seed in you, His love, you will not hate. You won’t be able to hate. That’s not who God is. And how powerful do you think He is?”

“Well… uh… you have to let God reign in your life.”

“Ah… you see [letting] God is still you having control. You are still doing something. You are “letting”. To be born again. To be resurrected … you’ve got to die. It’s not about [letting] God. It’s kinda funny when you think about it… “letting God”. It’s a kind of passive submissiveness. ‘I’m gonna let go, and let God.’ I get what they mean… but what if that is the real issue. Don’t let go, to let God. How ’bout dying, and God will live. When you die… the old is replaced with the new. If you are “letting” well… that’s pretty much still you “letting”. You are still in charge. Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Because, why?”

“Because what you are saying takes care of everything. It answers everything. Submitting to the authorities? It’s not me who is submitting, it is Christ in me. It’s not my will, but His will. Him. So much for letting go.”

“Yeah, crazy I know.”

“Hey, I gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
